Lawless

Lawless 12/4/2014

The hidden dagger comes out
From a black robed devil
Suddenly and savagely thrust
And plunging in,
Over and over again.

In the middle of the day
And in the middle of a life
The strange sacrificial addiction
Of the foolish
And the trusting.

You never know when
And you never know how
Because surprise, is the work of evil
To snatch away your life.

We avoid trouble
But we welcome the risk
As we look the other way
On our way to the end.

Evil can slip through a crack
But today it runs wild
Pouring in the city
And climbing over the walls.

Someone opened the door
And someone unchained the demons
So now they run rampant
Free to plot
And free to kill.

We should have seen it coming
As our instincts tingle with alarm bells
But we have been trained to ignore
And trained to forget.

We have not warned the children
So it should come as no surprise
That they fall victim to evil
Because they did not know.

The sun burns
And the cold wind
Cuts to the bone
But yet we go out
Unprotected and dumb.

Evil cares not for truth
And evil cares not for justice
But will do anything to fix the outcome
Where they win
And you die.

The world is full of fools
And the world is full of apologists
Useful as a shovel
To dig a ditch.

But this ditch is deep
And it is us
Who will kneel down
Silent until the end
Dead, rigid, and buried.

Words are only words
But first comes the words
Long before the laws
And the bullets.

The longest march
Starts with just one step
And the most predictable of genocides
Can start with
A single body.

Some will be saved
But many will refuse
Preferring temporary safety
Over truth
And fairness.

Eternity awaits
Because the dead cannot speak
While God watches
And remembers.
