Snowfall

Snowfall    2/18/2015

You can be smart
And you can be strong
But if you leave the back door open
Your throat can be slit.

Slithering like a snake
Or inching like a snail
Quiet as a razor
Cutting deep
And cutting through.

As simple as it gets
The random horror
Of deep hatred
Of sudden opportunity.

The young are innocent
Until they are taught,
Abused, hated
Manipulated, or indoctrinated.

That is where it starts
In the deepest part of self
A part of all of us
The good and the damned.

You can tell its winter
By the ice
Glistening in the trees
But spring is never far
When the buds have burst.

You can tell by the smell
That something has changed
As God always provides a sign
That another season has come.

Look around and feel it
The uneasy sense of dread
All around and everywhere
Crushing, heavy, and dead.

It all adds up
Like bodies in a ditch
The untold casualties
Overlooked and denied.

Come and see
Or wait and know
The curse of indifference
Dreadful and Ashen.
