Midnight

Midnight  12/5/2017

Like fire
Spreading through
A wheat field
The coiled spring
Bursts forth
Sudden and deadly.

A long time coming
And a long suffered yoke
The heaviness of lies
And fruit of death.

We who have waited
Have seen the horrible rot
Eating away everything we knew
And loved.

It was no accident
But we didn’t know it then
All of it preventable
Long ago
And far away.

They who want us gone
Also want us dead
For reasons far more vile
Than any dare speak.

The knives were sharpened
And poised behind our back
With all but the final plunge
In a murderous frenzy.

But by the miracle of a witness
We have bought a delay
A little more time to see
And to choose.

Time speeds up
And rushes to conclusion
Especially for the awakened,
Hunted, and abused.

Poisoned, bludgeoned
Kidnapped, and abused
The young and the innocent
Priceless and pure.

Ravaged by corruption
The disease of the nations
Flooding in
And rising up.

Climb on
And let us ride
Thundering up the hill
On a road less traveled.

Up and out of guilt
Without equivocation
Or regret
At last ready to claim
Who I we always were.

Come up
Fierce and free
Full of the spirit
Poured out
Free, pure and clear.
